This is a clip from Modern Family. Leading up to this clip Mitchell insists that Cameron keeps his “gayness” down because he doesn’t want to be tagged as the gay couple in a new baby class they just joined. He was trying to downplay his sexuality. As it turns out, towards the end of the clip, there is actually another gay couple that adopted a baby also that is part of the class. The new couple was openly gay and still accepted. Cameron doesn’t like to have to hide who he is but he did for Mitchell but when they realized they wouldn’t be judged he wanted to be true to himself and dance for his baby. Like we have discussed previously in class, homosexuality has become accepted in the media it still isn’t accepted at the same level as heterosexuals. On this show they make gay jokes, and often reference the fact that Mitchell is gay or at least a comment on his sexuality. It is never taken seriously. There are no jokes on the heterosexual couple or how they are in a typical relationship. However, there are a small number of comments on the other heterosexual couple on the age difference of Jay and Gloria. It just seems to reinforce that iconic couples are right and anything different is up for jokes. The media may discuss certain topics that are controversial but they may not tackle it equally. Just because something is mentioned or added to the story line doesn’t mean that they are presenting it in a good light.
