As we talked about today in class about the effects of Social Media, you might wonder that if it were not for such sites like Facebook, would this really be that big of a deal? I want to argue that without something like Facebook propelling this event then it would be nothing more than an e-mail from school officials telling us about the event and maybe a possible mention in the school newspaper, maybe. With a social media site like facebook being so popular all over especially on college campuses this news spread like wildfire. With the actual addition of the fan page, "The Ball State Ass Slapper," we saw the page go from no fans to around 5,000 within a day. To get 5,000 people in that amount of time to have heard or know anything about this incident and take a little more time to look into it would be unheard of without the likes of a site like Facebook.
I think that with Facebook being set up so that you can do most everything with just one click of a button it makes it very easy for information to passed along very easily. I received the e-mail about the Ball State Ass Slapper and probably like most students thought nothing of it, but when i got onto Facebook the next day and saw that there was actually a fan page on facebook, i thought it was pretty funny and joined. After reading what people had posted and reading all the different things on the page i found it to be pretty humorous. I am in no way for the disrespect of women in any way but to see some of these coments being posted and the stupid things people were saying i found myself actually checking the page every once in a while to see what was being said on it.
Somehow this story eventually ended up on Indianapolis news stations for the evening news. This in my opinion would never have happened without the craze that people felt to join and become a fan of The Ball State Ass Slapper group. With so much attention based on this it created a huge buzz with many people wanting to know more about it and with that all kinds of people were informed about it one way or the other.
