Social Media

After our discussion in class today I think that you can look at Social Media in a couple different ways. There are both positives and negatives that are linked with Social Media and different social media networks. We talked today about how we are affected by different social media networks whether it be one like Facebook, Myspace, online blogs, or other forums. Each of these can affect us in a good way like connecting us with others for example or in a bad way when these types of things can be a privacy issue or a distraction.

First I want to focus on the positives of Social Media. An example that i shared with the class today while discussing was the fact that my mother has joined the Facebook revolution. She lived in Colorado and went to high school and college there and has lived in Indiana the rest of her life. She had tons of friends out there who with exception of a few she lost touch with. With facebook she has been able to get ahold and talk with these friends that she was once so close with and hasnt been able to for such a long time. She is so happy to hear from all of her past friends and almost goes crazy when she gets a friend request of a past friend. It really has brought her a lot of joy just for the sole fact that she is able to communicate with so many people. Another positvie of social media would be myspace where it allows many different types of music groups or bands to get their music out to the world without worries of having to pay for copyrights or going through all the hoops and ladders to get the music out there.

I want to focus on really big negative that is associated with Social Media which is the privacy that goes along with it. With all these different things being added into our lives technologically it puts more and more information of our personal life onto the internet. With this more and more people are becoming concerned with their own personal privacy as well they should be. Facebook for example knows so much information about you with all the info that you have to enter in when you sign up. This information tells alot about you and what comes along with it is advertisements being directed towards you and when people search the internet for you, some of this information might come up.
