Movements

How to Make a Movement

This is a TED talk that I find very interesting. I think it is a great eye opener to me and probably many others because it is so simple but over looked. Derek Sivers talks about how a leader is not so much the first person to start something but it is the first person to step up and join. The first joiner is never given credit. In the video it shows the first guy dancing but then like he said, the first person to join is what makes the nut no longer alone. It is always easier to do something that you may not ordinary do when others are doing it first. I know I don't like to be the only one doing something and I don't really even like being the second one. I am definitely a group joiner for the most part... But this makes me want to be the second leader because you have a lot more power than what is actually given to you... I don't know, it just seems really cool and so very on point. That is all.. :)

Modern Family :)

http://www.hulu.com/watch/99353/modern-family-thief#s-p12-sr-i1

This is a clip from Modern Family. Leading up to this clip Mitchell insists that Cameron keeps his “gayness” down because he doesn’t want to be tagged as the gay couple in a new baby class they just joined. He was trying to downplay his sexuality. As it turns out, towards the end of the clip, there is actually another gay couple that adopted a baby also that is part of the class. The new couple was openly gay and still accepted. Cameron doesn’t like to have to hide who he is but he did for Mitchell but when they realized they wouldn’t be judged he wanted to be true to himself and dance for his baby. Like we have discussed previously in class, homosexuality has become accepted in the media it still isn’t accepted at the same level as heterosexuals. On this show they make gay jokes, and often reference the fact that Mitchell is gay or at least a comment on his sexuality. It is never taken seriously. There are no jokes on the heterosexual couple or how they are in a typical relationship. However, there are a small number of comments on the other heterosexual couple on the age difference of Jay and Gloria. It just seems to reinforce that iconic couples are right and anything different is up for jokes. The media may discuss certain topics that are controversial but they may not tackle it equally. Just because something is mentioned or added to the story line doesn’t mean that they are presenting it in a good light.

Eminem

I realize many people do not agree with most of Eminem's lyrics and actions most of the time but I have been a big fan of Eminem for quite a while now and I consider him to be a great artist. I don’t get offended with his lyrics but I do see how someone might. I get such a real vibe from him and his music. He does have a lot of songs about murder but that really doesn’t mean he is out to do it. We have all said that we wanted to kill someone and that’s no big deal. I believe that he is as popular he is not because he did what was “cool” or what management said would sell. I think that people like his raw lyrics and his music. He is true talent when it comes to rapping, regardless of what style. I am a fan and probably always will be. He has had some amazing songs and has been featured in number one hits while also having some bad songs. But as an artist, I think he is doing just what he wants and that is actually honorable because there are so many people in the business that are changed and told exactly what to do. They do not become famous but they are made famous. Eminem is real in my opinion. He didn’t fit the rappers mold when he came on to the scene and he clawed his way in and he is still around despite how much some people hate him. He is one of the greatest because he is still around making great music. Proof. :) byeeeeeee

Change in thought processsss

When I signed up for this class I didn't actually think it would change my in any way or the way I think about and view things. I just picked this class because I needed more comm classes for an extra minor I recently picked up. But it has actually changed the way I see things. I won't say that I am a super rhetorical thinker by any means but I do see things a little deeper than I had before. Well, deeper may not be the best description but I do see things differently. I watch shows now and notice when characters are either reinforcing stereotypes or resisting them. I have also realized why I like some shows and some shows I have no interest in at all.

For example, the show LOST does not get my attention. I kind of watched the first few episodes on and off but then there was a preview for a mysterious creature that also inhabited the island after one of the episodes I did catch. That is completely unbelievable to me. The coherence and fidelity were not strong for the show in my opinion so I stopped even trying to watch an episode. I also noticed that some other shows don’t look interesting to me because of the coherence and fidelity. I tend to be a realistic person so I typically do not like sci-fi shows and movies. However, there are always exceptions that have something extra that draws me in. Transformers was a sci-fi movie with robots coming and invading and aiding the world but the actors pulled me in more than the plot and I really enjoyed the movie despite the fact that I do not believe in robots what so ever.

I have also discovered that my level of necessary coherence and fidelity varies with my mood. If I am in a serious mood everything has to be perfect and make complete realistic sense or else I will hate it. I have a tendency to pick out the littlest things in movies and shows that don’t match up or seem real and it will ruin the movie for me. Little details like basketball movies when they double dribble, travel, don’t play completely by the rules or the game clock is off somehow I get worked up about how fake it is. I now know what that is and why I don’t enjoy movies and shows when they don’t make sense to me.

Facebook ads

Today's discussion on how Facebook has advertisements that are targeted towards your profiles information like gender and age influenced me to pay closer attention to the ads that pop up while I bop around from page to page. I made notes about what I saw and why I think that they were selected for me.

There were all sorts of things like grants and loans that were available to a 22 year old female college student. Just my luck, I am all three of those! I have never paid much attention to the ads because I find them annoying and almost insulting. Just because I am a female college student doesn't mean I am getting pregnant or interested in becoming a nurse. I think that weight-loss ads might cause a problem with some people because if they are dealing with weight issues and it is being hammered into their minds that "being thin is in" can cause more psychological problems then they may have already been dealing with. Those ads seem to hit at the right time, or the wrong time as it may be.

I don't think ads should be so targeted in such a generalized way. I understand to maximize your advertising you should aim for your target market buut where is the line? Facebook ads probably indirectly call all females fat. I am sure people realize that the ads are targeted for them based on their information posted but it still hits at home if you think you are over weight and there are constant weight loss advertisements.

And an additional note on Facebook. When we talked about the parasocial relationships it made me think that Facebook probably helps people achieve those. Having the ability to look at someone's Facebook page that has personal information, friends comments, and pictures you have the opportunity to learn a lot about a person without their knowing. I think that it is creepy but lets be honest, I think we have all creeped on peoples' pages and you may get a sense of a friendship that is one-sided.

I still enjoy Facebook I just don't agree with it and most of the time I kind of hate it. But it is what it is....
